We make sure that we include one number rhyme and one physical development rhyme (for example, manipulating the fingers to make the spider climb the water-spout) each half-term. This will also help prepare the children for the new National Curriculum, where children need to recite poetry by heart.Įach half-term we will hold a Mother Goose Club class performance and for every five newly learnt rhymes (whether spoken, verbalised or signed), the children will receive a special certificate! The children will learn three new rhymes each half-term, with the aim of learning eighteen rhymes (with signing!) at Weare Pre-School. In fact literacy specialist, Mem Fox, tells us in 'Reading Magic' that children who can say eight rhymes by four years of age will likely be among the best readers by the time they are eight years old.Īs part of our commitment to learning nursery rhymes, we have introduced the 'Mother Goose Club'. Evidence suggests that a familiarity with rhymes helps children to detect phonetic constituents of words. Research shows that the better the children are at detecting rhymes, the quicker and more successful they will be at learning to read. Our Reception Class children continue their love of singing, committing to learn thirty more nursery rhymes before the end of the summer term!
We value the importance of introducing these activities to our youngest children and aim to teach the children three nursery rhymes each half-term. Singing and rhymes take a great priority during our day.
